Not what I was expecting but still great

These pickups went into a G&L JB5. Compared to the stock pickups, they're definitely fuller/bassier sounding with slightly less high mids. Definitely more output too and of course, NO HUM. Personally, these pickups would definitely benefit from an onboard preamp but do sound killer in passive mode too. My intent with these pickups was to get the output of my JB5 closer to my G&L L2000s and Sandbergs, I think I've very much accomplished that. Overall, good investment.

Good pickups but be mindful of a few things

I bought these as I wasn’t patient enough to wait for the baxis pickups to restock. First of all, these pickups are built phenomenally, everything about them speaks quality. Both pickups solo have no hum. My one gripe is that with my Sire V7, I get too much output on the higher strings when adding bass boost. Brian was super helpful in trying to help me troubleshoot and was super patient with me!
Turning down the gain trimmer seemed to help, but the low end now feels lacking a little.
All in all, I’ve heard so many great demos of these pickups and I’d say that if you have a lighter touch these should be great for you. If you’re heavy handed, I’d suggested looking at something with either offset poles, or non exposed poles.

I bought these as I wasn’t patient enough to wait for the baxis pickups to restock. First of all, these pickups are built phenomenally, everything about them speaks quality. Almost perfect

The tone and clarity in these pickups are insane, especially with the low B. Really responsive and I can actually pick out the different notes in the lower register. The one downfall I had heard in reviews and after I installed them was with the slap aspect of them. Doing the pulls sound fine, but the slaps have very little articulation, especially to other options. Having a variable mid frequency as well as a mid knob really helped with bringing it out, so there is a workaround for it. The hum cancelling has a little to be desired as it isn't quite cancelled, but it is definitely a lot quieter than full single coils. But all around the best pickup for clean and articulate finger picking tone.

I wanted to mention for folks reading about the hum-cancelling comment - 5 string J pickups can sometimes not be perfectly humcancelling as Lucas mentions.

A couple reasons:

1) There may be other noise in the system

2) More specically to the 5 string issue... is that the coils are not equal. Very commonly for split coil, or inline coil pickups, such as these pickups AND many others, each pickup has a coil for 3 of the strings and another for 2 of the strings. This is a design where it is difficult to get perfect humcancelling - even though, the tone can be exactly what the pickup builder is aiming for...and where hum is greatly reduced.

Like Lucas mentions, it is going to be much quieter than single coils. There are some designs which are 'stacked' coils, where their are two coils running the entire length of the pickup. Obviously, the sound would be very different and may not be what the pickup builder is shooting for. Frankly, the number of stacked coil offerings for J Bass is quite slim compared to what is available in a split coil.

WHAT IS THE TONE OF THE JMVC5 FE/M2 (AS) BASS PICKUP?

The JMVC4 FE/M2 have become a very popular modern sounding J bass pickup. These pickups have a very full range, having an open top end and slightly forward low mid, where lows are strong but clear. These muscular pickups will be at home in any genre situation. Their clarity and presence will help stand out in a mix without sound bright. The JMVC5 FE/M2 and JMVC5 FE/M2-AS will sound extremely similar to the 4 string version shown/heard in the video below.
