The 4 on the Floor is a massively flexible bass overdrive and distortion pedal that represents Genzler's deep understanding of what bass players need from a drive pedal. It's essentially four overdrives in one, offering a range that goes from pushed tube amp territory to full-bore distortion, depending on the setting you choose.
What sets the 4 on the Floor apart from typical overdrive pedals is its comprehensive approach to bass-specific needs. The four different character modes aren't just variations on the same theme, they're distinctly different tones optimized for different musical applications. Whether you need subtle tube-style saturation for adding warmth and presence, or aggressive distortion for cutting through heavy mixes, there's a character setting that delivers exactly what you're looking for.
These character options are combined with some incredibly useful stage-ready features that address real-world performance challenges. The high-pass and low-pass filters are particularly useful. The high-pass filter helps eliminate the unwanted low-end mud that makes your bandmates ask you to turn down, while the low-pass filter can tame harsh high frequencies that are painfully noticeable when playing on cabs with tweeters/horn or through a full range PA system.
The independent drive and clean volume knobs allow you to control the volume of each signal separately. This parallel processing approach means you can blend your clean signal with the driven signal to maintain your fundamental bass tone while adding the character and aggression you need. It's like having a blend knob, but with much more precise control over each element.
The 4 on the Floor is the perfect overdrive/distortion pedal if you’re really happy with your core tone but want to add different drive characters, since it doesn’t really change your overall eq, but rather adds a gain stage to your tone.
From Genzler:
The 4 On The Floor Classic Bass Overdrive offers 4 separate “gears” of variable analog overdrive textures and harmonic content to shift through, along with a clean blend feature. HPF and LPF controls are included to shape the overdrive engine’s signal path. This pedal offers touch sensitive asymmetrical and symmetrical overdrive characteristics, variations of compression and overdrive complexity, along with a true bypass. The versatility allows this to be used as a clean boost, along with the various overdrive gears, up to all out heavy saturated drive. This pedal also offers another level of versatility as it accepts nearly any power supply; 9 – 18 Volts, either polarity. (Power supply not included).
The 4 On The Floor™ Classic Bass Overdrive is an all analog bass overdrive pedal that gracefully emulates 4 different overdrive types found in classic tube circuit topologies and then gives the player additional control over drive/gain, overdrive path (only) with high pass and low pass filters and separately a clean blend. The result is the ability to tailor and fine tune the overdrive to fit with a wide spectrum of music and playing techniques, without the loss of touch sensitivity, musicality, or the addition of induced excess noise. This versatile pedal can be used as a clean boost, an “always on” tonal enhancement, or offering varied overdrive textures to shift through, for selected performance requirements.
