I installed this in a Sterling Stingray short scale which is a passive bass. The unit is small enough that I was able to fit and a 9v battery under the control plate, a little Dremel help here and there. It functions great, no noise at all. It has the push pull for passive and with all controls centered there is zero volume or tone difference, active or passive. The tone controls work really well and have a very useable boost and cut, it is all useable without being extreme. I'm super happy with it and the price is very reasonable.
I installed this along with a Delano pickup in my Sterling short scale bass. The bass comes passive but I was able to enlarge the control cavity a little with a Dremel and it all fits in perfectly. I called Fat Bass tone and I know they thought I was crazy, great customer service by the way.
After installation, a breeze for anyone who's soldered before it worked first time. I wired the pickup Parallel/Single/Series which adds to the versatility. The pre-amp engages with the push pull volume knob and as they advertise, the volume is the same active and passive. The sweep of the treble and bass are very useable without being over the top. I am super happy with this pre-amp. I have a 2003 EBMM Stingray , 2023 Stingray special and also a Ray4 so I have basses to compare it to. This one sounds great, is super small and inexpensive. I highly recommend it.
Delano Sonar 2/3 preamps are one of the most transparent sounding on the planet . It’s true when the tones are in the middle and you pull up passive the is no difference in volume . And fat bass tone has these in stock all the time !!!!

Big improvement from the OEM preamp that was distorting with any moderate boost. This remains clear and has more boost. The pots are light weight, but we'll constructed.
