The MMSR preamp has been designed with characteristics very similar to the original MM Stingray. 2 Band EQ, in order to retain the same interaction between the MM pickup and the electronics, crucial in creating the original pre EB sound colours. Additionally, the MMSR preamp has separate stages for the bass and treble, allowing us to further enhance and extend the bass control.
The 3-Band version has the extra feature of a Mid Sweep. When the Mid boost/cut is centred, its effect is neutral and the EQ is purely late 70s MM style.
These units are supplied fully wired, with pots & knobs, Switchcraft jack plus battery clip, which may be spliced into an existing battery box, as would be available in most MM style basses. There are screw terminals for the pickup connections for easy installation and a ground wire is provided to connect the bridge and any other grounding points or screening. Out of the box, just connect the pickup, snap on a battery, plug into a rig and you have sound, but remember that the grounding connections are crucial in attaining a solid installation.
These preamps do not come with a plate. They do come with chrome knobs.
MMSR 2-Band, 3 Knob: Volume -- Treble (Late 70's MM Style) -- Bass (Late 70's MM Style Enhanced)
MMSR 3-Band, 3 Knob: Volume -- Bass/Treble Stack (Late 70's MM Style) w/ Bright Push Pull -- Mid/Mid Frequency Sweep Stack
MMSR 3-Band, 4 Knob: Volume -- Treble (Late 70's MM Style) -- Mid/Mid Frequency Sweep Stack -- Bass (Late 70's MM Style Enhanced)
VOLUME
Sets the level from the preamp, feeding the output jack directly, like the orignal. This means that the pickup feeds the preamp directly, allowing the best possible transfer of signal, and full interraction of the pickup with the preamp.
BASS & TREBLE
TREBLE (+20dB / -16dB @ 10 kHz)
There is more boost than cut, giving rise the characteristic 'sizzle' associated with the Stingray© style of EQ.
BRIGHT (Only available on 3-Band, 3 Knob Version)
Pull the Treble knob for the Bright setting.
BASS (+14dB / -7dB @ 40Hz)
The bass control has a little more boost than the original. The boost curve continues to rise towards the lower frequencies, without flattening out at any frequency within the normal bass guitar range. Conversly the cut characteristic is shelving, having an essentially flat response from 30 - 100Hz, when fully cut.
POWER
This unit can be powered from 9 or 18 Volts DC.
MID LEVEL & FREQUENCY (Only available on 3-Band Versions)
BOOST/CUT (+/-12dB)
The upper knob sets the amount of Mid boost or cut at frequencies according to the setting of the Frequency knob. The midway indent is the 'flat' setting.
FREQUENCY(100Hz-1kHz or 200Hz-2kHz)
The lower outer ring sets the continuously variable Mid frequencies for boost or cut. DIL switches on the circuit board allow low or high ranges to be set. Both switch sections should be set to ON for the Low Range and both set to OFF for the High Range.
