DESCRIPTION

In designing the Relentless pickups, DiMarzio removed all the hard edges from the standard J Bass® pickup and added an arch to the top of the pickup to bring the sensing coils and pole pieces closer to the strings. These improvements increase the dynamic range and make active circuits unnecessary.

DiMarzio invented (patent pending) parallelogram-shaped coils to add dimension, punch, and dynamics to the Relentless™ J sound, and they incorporated metal covers with foil-shielded cables to further suppress the background noise.

DiMarzio’s extra shielding makes the Relentless™ J better for both recording and stage performances. They mounted it onto a robust .09375” thick circuit board base plate so they could eliminate the annoying protruding mounting screws — ultimately creating a more comfortable and consistent foundation to rest your fingers on.

To improve the balance when both pickups are used together, DiMarzio made the bridge position pickup louder than the neck position pickup. When the pickups are blended, you get a better volume match.

The Relentless™ pickups incorporate Neodymium magnets and produce 70 percent more output than traditional passive pickups, and they’re dead quiet. DiMarzio has expanded the mid-range punch, adding snappy highs and precise lows. These pickups have a broad magnetic field so you can even bend notes without volume drop out.

Relentless™ J pickups will breathe new life into any bass, increase playability, and work well for any style of music from Motown to metal.

OPEN BOX DEMO ITEM: There is one unit which was opened and installed exclusively for the purpose of making demo videos. This pickup was installed for less than thirty minutes here at the Fat Bass Tone shop.

J-bass on steroids

Having had past satisfaction with the trusty DiMarzio Model J pickups, I was intrigued by what looked to be Model J 2.0; the Relentless Jazz set. It is all summed up in the title of this review. My 2024 FSR (MIM) J-bass deserved the latest in technology, and I am not afraid of a soldering iron. Still feeling my way through this set, with about 5 hours on them, as of this writing. My J thinks it's a P. I have P/J tonality with advanced J ergonomics (particularly when plucking over the bridge pickup), I use various pedal preamps to beef up the tone on my other J-basses (multiple rigs; a preamp for each), but find that the preamps are not needed with the Relentless set giving me ample signal strength. There might be more to be said, in time. So far, it's nothing but positives.
