The J-Tone is a new on board preamp with a fully passive signal path and a high spec professional active preamp. It is designed to fit directly into any jazz style bass without the need for invasive modification to the instrument. In passive mode, the original jazz style bass is fully maintained since the signal path is a replica of those in the original Jazz.
The J-TONE pre amp was created to replicate the authentic original passive wiring of the J style bass with a high spec Active EQ. It’s designed as a direct drop-in replacement, including a place for the battery. It’s easy to fit at home using basic tools, no soldering, no physical changes to the instrument.
The Active EQ is simplicity itself, incorporating highly responsive bass and treble controls, taken from the John East high end UNI-PRE system. Internal edge wheels allow individual custom voicing for both the bass and treble control spectrums. Instrument qualities can be enhanced in conjunction with tone-shaping to match playing styles.

First of all, bass sounds completely different even with cheap pickups. I will eventually upgrade the pickups. Buy it you will not regret it.
There is no better drop-in pre for a Fender J. Flexible eq points for bass and treble? Yes! Amazing! Deep and wide to punchy low end, lower treble to super sweet upper treble snappy top end. No soldering? Yes! Amazing! What is typically "missing" in a passive J bass (extension in the depth and upper frequencies) is here, and all with a passive tone control that works in active and passive mode. Can be ordered with master volume and pickup pan, or two volumes and tone control (as a standard J bass - best layout for tone flexibility). Comes with extra capacitors which can be simply "plugged in". The standard cap installed, (in my opinion) is perfect, when rolled off, it is beautifully dark and furry yet clear as a velvet covered bell. A better, more flexible (as well as simple drop in/no solder) 2 band pre simply doesn't exist (nor need it exist).

JTone is a perfect addition to my JBass. True bypass is a must-have.
JBass doesn't need much help so I use true bypass half the time but use active tone shaping whenever necessary. Great product requiring no mods to instrument cavity.
Great sounding preamp. I am looking forward to using different tone caps for different scenarios. Quick fulfillment from FBT! The preamp didn’t fit into the control cavity of my bass so I had to route it deeper, wider and longer, so it wasn’t a zero mod install but it was easy and worth it.
