I figured it was time to upgrade my Sterling RAY4 after owning it for about a year. I stuck with the two band to keep the vintage vibe, but with a bit a of a kicker... I routed a bit of the control cavity out to make room for another 9V battery... making this an 18V preamp. I did try it out in 9V at first and it's outstanding, but bringing it up to 18V gives you more headroom and dynamics, as well as 6dB more gain on the two bands and volume.
I initially paired the OBP-2 with an Aguilar AG-4M, which is a great pickup and sounds good, but I read some reviews and decided to try out the Delano MC4 AL/V4. The Delano, paired with the OBP-2 is incredible. It truly sounds like a vintage Musicman Stingray. The added benefit of having the 18V of headroom is a great modern addition.
These kits are super easy to install, pre-wired and ready to go. I used to the stock 9V battery compartment/connector paired with the 9V battery connector included in this kit to make the preamp 18V. If you're installing this in a RAY4, It's MUCH easier to leave the stock battery compartment and connector and use that as your power source for the preamp. You can choose to wire in the included 9V connector, but it's not mandatory.
Anyway, if you're looking to get that classic Stingray tone, the OBP-2, paired with a good pickup will do the trick.
Also, the Fat Bass Tone customer service is AWESOME. I gave them a call after placing my order because I wanted to make a change, and get some details about the kit. Super friendly and extremely knowledgeable. After receiving the kit, I texted back and forth with him to make sure I had everything right. Top TOP notch company. I will be doing business with these guys again.
Fat bass tone is awesome I got my preamp sooner than expected. My pal installed it for me and my bass has unbelievable sustain🎸😀
