DESCRIPTION

The DiMarzio Model J has stood as the ultimate aftermarket Jazz Bass pickup replacement for decades. If you are a player of a certain age, you will undoubtedly remember seeing the legendary Billy Sheehan in those classic bass magazine advertisements, proudly showing off his custom instruments loaded with Model J pickups.

From a strictly tonal perspective, this design is purpose-built for the bassist who loves the sleek feel and fast neck of a traditional J-Bass, but wants it to sound a lot closer to a classic P-Bass. However, this is not just aiming for vintage P-Bass tone; it replicates a higher-output, aggressively overwound P-Bass. If that massive, low-mid driving vibe is exactly what you are going for, then the Model J is the perfect upgrade for your bass.

What sets the Model J apart from traditional single-coils is its incredibly punchy, focused response and its heavy low-mid emphasis. It is engineered specifically for players who need to effortlessly find their space in the mix and decisively cut through. Your bass lines remain distinct, heavy, and full of authority.

Its hum canceling design gives you the dead-quiet operation needed for modern high-gain stages or studio recording sessions, completely eliminating the annoying 60-cycle hum associated with vintage single-coils. Furthermore, the individual adjustable pole pieces allow you to perfectly tailor the string-to-string volume balance, ensuring that every single note you play speaks evenly across the entire fretboard, matching your fingerboard radius perfectly.

If you want to make your beloved J-Bass significantly punchier and ensure you cut through a dense, aggressive mix with undeniable low-mid authority, then the DiMarzio Model J is the pickup for you. It offers an organic, responsive feel that reacts beautifully to aggressive pick playing or heavy fingerstyle. Give the Model J a try if you’re looking to completely transform your instrument J bass, and give it some undeniable sonic authority.

From DiMarzio:

DiMarzio Model J™ pickups reproduce the warmth and roundness of the traditional Fender® Jazz Bass® sound with increased power and hum-cancellation. The additional power translates into a bigger sound that emphasizes the resonant character of the instrument.

The DiMarzio Model J™ pickup’s sensitivity and deep tone are also the perfect complement to fretless basses.

Unlike traditional Jazz Bass® pickups, each Model J™ is individually humbucking. It's not a stack: each coil picks up one pair of strings. By doing it this way, DiMarzio keeps the resistance down, and the tone clean and clear.

The DiMarzio Model J™ was designed to fit the original Fender Jazz Bass, which has neck and bridge pickup cavities of two different sizes.

**Sorry international bassists, but US Dealers are not authorized to ship DiMarzio pickups outside of the US.

WHAT IS THE TONE OF THE DIMARZIO MODEL J BASS PICKUP SET?

The Model J pickup has big focus in the low mids, giving it a nice punch and forward sound. The upper mids are scooped and the top end is rolled off. The slap tone is quite nice as it punches in the perfect spot. Solo’d, the neck pickup is big and wooly…excellent for rock. The bridge pickup is tighter, and can work well to tighten up the tone of the neck when used together.

Put on a good set of headphones and check out the audio demo below to hear it for yourself.

As always, keep in mind that these are generalizations. Your experience could be different depending on many factors.
