This pickup set, endorsed by the legendary Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, is reason enough for many players to take notice. Beyond the name, it’s inspired by a unique and thoughtful approach that isn’t often seen in most P pickups or PJ sets. The P pickup is modeled after Geezer’s favorite early ’70s Precision Bass and features slightly higher output without being overwound. This preserves clarity and attack, resulting in a well-balanced, classic P-Bass tone.
Compared to a late ’60s P-Bass pickup, this design offers a bit more high-mid presence. When paired with the noiseless J pickup, the result is an extremely versatile PJ set that works especially well for players who use distortion or higher-gain tones.
The J pickup is slightly overwound, adding extra midrange content for a thick, beefy sound—even when both pickups are blended together. Its hum-canceling design allows you to use any pickup combination without unwanted noise, which is a major advantage in demanding live or studio environments.
This pickup set works beautifully across a wide range of genres. The P pickup delivers an early ’70s vibe with added clarity and punch, while the J pickup contributes definition and snap. Soloed, the P pickup provides classic Precision thump with enhanced articulation, and the J pickup offers a focused, cutting tone that’s ideal for fingerstyle and slap playing.
The fully passive design means there are no batteries to manage, and the tone remains organic and responsive to your playing dynamics. These pickups react naturally to volume and tone control adjustments, giving you a broad palette of usable sounds directly from your instrument.
Built to EMG’s exacting standards, the pickups offer consistent performance and long-term reliability. If you’re looking for a passive pickup set with clarity, punch, and a true early ’70s character, the Geezer Butler PJ set is an excellent choice. Completely hum-free thanks to the hum-canceling J pickup and available in Black, Ivory, and White, this set delivers the tone that helped define heavy music while remaining versatile enough for virtually any style.
From EMG:
The EMG Geezer Butler Pickup Set (PJ) is one of EMGs premier passive pickup sets that they have created while working with a specific artist.
While known for their active designs, EMG continues to impress by sitting down at the bench and doing the hard work of recreating a tone that a prolific and legendary bass player has had.
Geezer wanted a traditional sound much like the early Sabbath tone. The EMG Geezer Pickups are a 1970s type tone that have some grind but with snap and punch.
While the P is by nature humcancelling, EMG and Geezer choose to build a J pickup that is also humcancelling, which adds more output and strength then found in a typical vintage J pickup. Both the P and J pickup use Alnico 5 magnets.
What they achieved is an excellent tone that is focused and deep and recognizable as that found on the Sabbath’s classics. Geezer had traditionally had reservations to lend his name to a set of pickups, but these, the EMG Geezer Butler pickups have met his high sonic standards.
