It's been the modern sound of J-Bass for about 40 years. It's one of the reasons why you've heard this J-Bass pickup in more albums than you would reckon. This pickup has been used in studios by great session musicians like Guy Pratt (and many more), who installed the Js in his '64 Jazz Bass in the early '80s and never turned back. He recorded hundreds of hits for multi-platinum artists such as Pink Floyd and Madonna.
The reason why this has been the pickup of choice of so many pros is that this pickup isn't as far off from what you would get from a vintage-voiced passive pickup. We like to think of it as punchier, slightly less scooped, and with a tasteful high-mid emphasis compared to a vintage passive example. But it's the punch that's the result of its slight compression from its internal preamp that makes it sound so amazing with pick and slapping techniques.
For bass players, compression can be a really good thing. It helps us find our place better in a mix and changes the feel of our instrument. The radiused ceramic bar magnet ensures the tone keeps a tight midrange punch with dynamic high-end response. EMG's design has a very low ratio of resistance to inductance, which increases the low-end response while maintaining clarity.
This pickup set has classic Jazz Bass characteristics with a broader tonal frequency range that adds dimensions and clarity. Whether you play fretted or fretless, live or in the studio, you'll get an incredibly full sound. The clean J-Bass tone has a nice, open (non-brittle) top end, while the low end is warm and more organic sounding than most non-EMG enthusiasts would expect.
Also, the fact that it's completely silent and due to its preamp has a tone that won't degrade with long cable lengths makes this an amazing choice for bass players that love the sound of their J-Bass but want a little bit more from it.
Installation is straightforward thanks to EMG's solderless wiring system, which includes everything you need. Available in Black, White, and Ivory, the EMG J also works great with a variety of onboard preamps or with its included tone control.
