DESCRIPTION

The J-bass has a huge amount of tones available when you go out of the often-used center position. The problem is that since traditionally these are single coils, you get 60-cycle hum. Which in some cases is simply not acceptable. Maybe it's because you're using your bass in the studio, or with IEMs (hum gets super annoying with in-ear monitors), or you just really don’t like it.

Well, that's why Lindy Fralin created the split-coil Jazz pickups. These Jazz Bass pickups have no 60-cycle hum and are voiced in such a way that they are almost indistinguishable from their single-coil counterparts. They have all the touch sensitivity that you would expect from a single coil as well as the high end snap that J-Bass pickups are known for.

You would have to listen to recordings side-by-side to pinpoint which one of these pickups is the single coil and which one isn't. And even then, you might still get it wrong.

Fralin's approach to split-coil design is particularly sophisticated. Unlike some hum-canceling pickups that sacrifice tone for noise reduction, these maintain the essential character that makes Jazz bass pickups so beloved. The split-coil construction uses two smaller coils wired in series with opposite magnetic polarity, effectively canceling hum while having an unperceptible impact in tone.

Most people don't realize these are hum-canceling pickups until they notice they don't get any noise. That's how good they are. These pickups were voiced to replicate the early 60s Jazz bass tone, which has that unmistakable growl and articulation that defined countless classic recordings.

If you want all the dynamics and snap that you get from a traditional early 60s pickup design, but with none of the drawbacks like 60-cycle hum, these Fralin J Bass pickups are a great option. They're also great if you want to have a super flexible Jazz bass. This is a great pickup for that because you can get something very close to P-bass tones if you solo the neck pickup, and you can get all of those other in-between sounds that are just wonderful but oftentimes unusable when you are using single coils because of the hum.

These pickups excel in recording situations where noise floor is critical, live performances, and any scenario where you need the full tonal palette of your Jazz bass without compromise. Whether you're playing fingerstyle, with a pick, or slapping, these Fralin split-coils deliver the authentic Jazz bass experience.

From Lindy Fralin

Lindy Fralin Split Jazz Bass Pickups offer a loud, clear and even response to four string bass players with no hum. This bass pickup allows you to get all of the Jazz-Bass vibe that you love, minus the hum. Being a hum-canceling Jazz Bass pickup, it’s fat, thick, and a little thicker sounding than a single-coil Jazz Bass.

Fralin's Split Jazz Bass Pickups are Noiseless Jazz Bass Pickups. They feature USA-Made magnets and wire and are wound by hand, one at a time. Featuring a Left-Right Coil design for no-hum, you will absolutely love the sound of Fralin's Split Jazz Bass Pickups. These pickups are wound to 60’s specifications, using top-of-the-line materials to give you a clear, open tone: all across the board.

5% OVERWIND

The 5% Overwind produces a thicker and darker tone. It reduces the highs by 5% and increases the lows and mids by 5%…basically thickening up the midrange while retaining brightness.

WHAT IS THE TONE OF THE LINDY FRALIN SPLIT JAZZ BASS® PICKUP SET?

Fralin’s offering in the Split Jazz version does not disappoint. These pickups are very responsive and have a nice bouncy feel. There is a bit of mid range scoop that sounds good, and just a pliable feeling all around. Neck pickup has a slight squishy feeling that is nice.

Put on a good set of headphones and check out the audio demo below to hear it for yourself.

As always, keep in mind that these are generalizations. Your experience could be different depending on many factors.

Amazing!

The Fat Bass Tone staff was fantastic to work with on selecting a new Jazz bass pickup. I had it narrowed down to a few models. We had a long conversation reviewed the options, go some great information, insight, and some laughs! Decided on the Fralin Split Jazz and couldn’t be happier! I highly recommend, both Fat Bass Tone AND the Split Jazz pickup, top quality.
