DESCRIPTION

Lollar pickups have a knack for sounding just right. That's because the folks at Lollar, with their vast knowledge of winding pickups, have a huge amount of experience to draw from. They have tone recipes that always seem to hit the spot of what their intended goal is. In this case, their goal is to provide vintage-voiced tone.

If you've been wanting that very specific voice that you would get from a 4-string Jazz bass but haven't been able to find the right pickup for your 5-string, you should have these Lollars on your short list. These are voiced to sound like the classic early 60s Jazz bass. They have the growl, they have the slightly scooped mids, and the snappy high end that we've all come to love about this style of bass pickup, but with the added fifth string.

The challenge with 5-string Jazz bass pickups has always been maintaining tonal consistency across all strings, particularly with the low B string. Many manufacturers struggle to achieve the proper balance, often resulting in a muddy low B that doesn't integrate well with the traditional Jazz bass character.

This fifth string was implemented in a very thoughtful way because it still retains the character that matches the rest of the strings, which is exactly what we're looking for. We want the bass to sound consistent across all the strings, and the folks at Lollar have definitely achieved this goal. The low B string maintains clarity and definition while preserving that vintage Jazz bass growl that makes these pickups so useful.

Just like everything that Lollar builds, these pickups are handcrafted in their family-owned production facility. You can expect the highest quality construction and attention to detail that has made Lollar a trusted name among professional bass players and luthiers.

Something particular about Lollar is that these pickups are not made in a traditional assembly line, but rather the old-fashioned way where one builder handles the pickup from beginning to end. This ensures consistency and quality control and a level of craftsmanship not seen in many brands.

Many customers pair them with an onboard preamp so they get access to modern-sounding J-bass tones, and at the flip of switch, go to passive mode and get all that classic 60s growl and snap.

From Lollar

If your bass playing includes slap, melodic lead lines or chords, you’ll love Lollar's take on the original ‘60s J-Bass® pickup. It offers a bright and percussive sound with increased mid-range.

WHAT IS THE TONE OF THE LOLLAR 60s JAZZ BASS® PICKUPS?

Outstanding set of vintage j bass pickups. These Lollar’s are punchy and warm. The bridge pickup is more meaty and thick than many bridge pickups.

Note: The pickup used for this video is the Lollar 4 string pickup. The 5 string sizes/shapes will sound similar, but not exact as they will use a longer magnet. Lollar is engineering them to sound as close to each other as possible.

Put on a good set of headphones and check out the audio demo below to hear it for yourself.

As always, keep in mind that these are generalizations. Your experience could be different depending on many factors.
