The EMG P is one of the original active designs by EMG, and for most players, this is the reference point for what you would call modern bass tone. In all honesty, this still sounds very much within the P family of tones, but it does have its own very unique character. I like to think about this pickup as a P-bass pickup with a very distinct character.
That character is that it's punchier, slightly higher output, clearer in the mids, snappier in the highs, and goes slightly lower in the lows. What this gives you is the impression of a fuller-range sound that's overtly clearer, so you won't get lost in the mix. You're still holding your own, as you would with a more traditional-voiced P-bass pickup, but you get that extra clarity, snap, and definition that may be exactly what the music you're playing needs.
EMG's approach to active pickup design focuses on consistency and reliability. The internal preamp ensures that your tone stays consistent regardless of cable length, venue acoustics, or the quality of your signal chain. This makes them particularly valuable for touring musicians who need predictable results night after night.
The frequency response is carefully tuned to provide maximum impact in a mix. The extended low end gives you the foundation you need for modern music, while the enhanced high-frequency response ensures that your attack and articulation cut through dense arrangements. The midrange is present and clear, allowing the pickup to work well across different musical styles.
The EMG P has been used on countless recordings across multiple genres, from rock and metal to funk and pop. Its ability to cut through a mix while maintaining the fundamental character of a P-bass has made it a favorite among players who need their bass to be heard clearly in any musical context.
Installation is straightforward, with EMG's solderless wiring system making the process accessible even for players who aren't comfortable with traditional pickup swaps. The system includes everything you need for a complete installation, including the battery clip and output jack.
The build quality reflects EMG's decades of experience in active pickup design. The components are selected for their sonic properties and long-term reliability, while the sealed construction protects the internal electronics from moisture and temperature changes.
Whether you're playing rock, metal, funk, or any style that demands clarity and punch, the EMG P delivers the modern P-bass tone that has defined countless recordings.

The EMG P was a very interesting test, especially within the context of testing a pile of P pickups. While a lot of folks believe / feel / hear that EMG pickups can sound sterile, we did not feel this while doing our P pickup demos. Our general feeling is that they sound pretty full range. A bit of a scooped mid range can be heard, and this is no doubt a tone that is very appealing to many players.
Put on a good set of headphones and check out the audio demo below to hear it for yourself.
As always, keep in mind that these are generalizations. Your experience could be different depending on many factors.
