This is a perfect pickup for those bass players out there who really love their P-bass and their J Bass. With low-mid presence, great performance in just about any mix, and the thump and authority of a P bass, it has the clarity, snap, growl, and the freedom to explore different musical possibilities without stomping over everything else.
The Big Split was designed by the folks at Nordstrand to be that one pickup you'll love if you're a P-bass player and you'll also love if you're a J-bass player, because it combines the best of both of these pickups.
If you look at it from a P-bass perspective, it's like a super clear, snappy, and tight-sounding P-bass. Or if you look at it from a J-bass perspective, it's fuller in the mids, punchier, thicker, and doesn't get lost in the mix, the kind of J-bass tone that holds its own in any musical situation.
What you end up getting is kind of the Goldilocks tone of pickups. Not too much, not too little, but just right. The Big Split delivers the fundamental punch of a P-bass with the articulation and clarity of a J-bass, creating a hybrid voice that works across virtually any musical style.
The hum-canceling design means you get all this tonal versatility without any of the noise that can plague single-coil pickups. This makes the Big Split ideal for studio work and live performances where noise control is crucial. The split-coil configuration eliminates 60-cycle hum while maintaining the dynamic response and tonal character that makes these pickups so musical.
If you have a soapbar-equipped bass that you'd love to do everything you want it to do, then this is a great option. The Big Split fits standard soapbar routes, making it a straightforward upgrade for many modern basses. The installation is simple, but the tonal transformation is significant.
The construction quality reflects Nordstrand's commitment to professional-grade pickups. Each pickup is wound to exact specifications, ensuring consistency and reliability.
From Nordstrand:
Its nature is of a sort of hybrid P/J character, only it delineates a smoother, stronger, and richer tonal palette. Given the extrapolated personality of its P/J sound, the Big Split is a top notch choice for both fretless playing and the Jazz Bass®-on-steroids tone purist. The Big Split uses the same angled magnet layout as out the Big Single, only the coil is split after the D string. Through fitting as much wire as we could between two coils under a soap-bar cover, we have come up with a tone that is fat, clean, and stylistically game changing.
The Big Split design comes from yet another tale of what others might think of as perfunctory whimsicality, but what we at Nordstrand like to think of as simply the madness in our meticulous methods. This pickup’s hybrid timbre was created when Jazz Bass® and Precision Bass® tone was accidentally dropped into our Sonic Superconducting Particle Collider. The result was sonic pulverization, an explosion of vibe and ventriloquistic parentage; for it was found thereafter that the best aspects of the P/J character seemed to speak through the Big Split, and thus this hybrid joined the ranks of our bass pickup arsenal.

Nordstrand’s split coil soapbars are very well balanced. Blended, these pickups give a bit more mid-range than typical Jazz Bass® pickups. The neck really stands out. In general, the focus of the pickups feel wide. Top end has a pleasing crunch.
