DESCRIPTION

Love the distinctive clarity and response of Dingwall bass pickups, but play a conventional parallel-fret bass? The Nordstrand Dingstrand Nordwall 4 brings the Dingwall FD3 pickup design to a 4-string replacement pickup set. Developed through a collaboration between Nordstrand and Dingwall, these pickups deliver a neutral, even, and clean tonal response with excellent dynamics and definition.

Each pickup uses an offset split-coil design with neodymium disc magnets, individually copper-shielded coils, and wax-potted construction. The result is a focused, articulate pickup with the quick response and balanced character associated with the Nordwall design. These sets are intended for conventional parallel-fret basses with 18mm to 19mm bridge string spacing.

CHOOSE YOUR HOUSING: This listing offers two different housing configurations: EMG® 40 Shape and Bartolini® BC Shape. They are not interchangeable sizes. Carefully compare the dimensions diagrams below with your existing pickup cavities before ordering.

DIMENSIONS & FIT

IMPORTANT: EMG® 40 and Bartolini® BC are different housing shapes. Choose the version that matches your existing pickup cavity, and verify the mounting dimensions before ordering.

EMG® 40 SHAPE

This variant uses the EMG® 40-size housing configuration. It is not the shorter EMG® 35 shape listed for the standard Nordwall 4 on Nordstrand's website.

Use the diagram below to verify: overall length, width, mounting-hole locations, and fit against your existing pickups.

EMG® 40 shape — refer to the measurements shown in this diagram.

BARTOLINI® BC SHAPE

This variant uses the Bartolini® BC-size housing. Nordstrand publishes a nominal housing length of 3.99" and width of 1.27" for the standard BC version.

Use the diagram below to verify: overall length, width, mounting-hole locations, and fit against your existing pickups.

Bartolini® BC shape — refer to the measurements shown in this diagram.

FIT NOTE: Matching the general EMG® 40 or Bartolini® BC footprint does not guarantee a drop-in installation. Confirm your existing cavity dimensions, mounting-hole locations, pickup depth, and string alignment before ordering. These pickups are designed for conventional parallel-fret basses rather than being a universal replacement for every Dingwall instrument.

THE NORDWALL SOUND

The Dingstrand Nordwall is designed around a relatively neutral, clean, and even response rather than an exaggerated bass or midrange character. Its offset split-coil construction and neodymium magnets contribute to the distinctive response of the FD3 design.

Nordstrand publishes the following relative tonal ratings:

  • Tonal Balance: 7/10 — toward the brighter, less bass-heavy side
  • Midrange: 3/10 — relatively restrained mids
  • Dynamics: 8/10 — quick, tight, and controlled response
  • Character / Color: 4/10 — relatively neutral overall voicing

These are Nordstrand's subjective tonal ratings, not laboratory measurements. The final sound will depend on your bass, strings, electronics, pickup height, and playing technique.

WHICH HOUSING SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Both options belong to the Nordwall 4 pickup family. The key selection difference is the physical housing shape.

  • EMG® 40 Shape: Choose this option when your bass has EMG® 40-size pickup cavities and the measurements in the diagram match your instrument. This is the EMG® 40 housing configuration offered by Fat Bass Tone, not Nordstrand's published standard EMG® 35 configuration.
  • Bartolini® BC Shape: Choose this option when your bass has Bartolini® BC-size pickup cavities. The standard BC housing measures approximately 3.99" long by 1.27" wide, but you should also verify the mounting dimensions.

Do not select based on string count alone. Bass manufacturers use different soapbar housing dimensions, even on instruments with the same number of strings. Measure the pickups currently installed in your bass before choosing a variant.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Dingstrand Nordwall pickup?

The Dingstrand Nordwall is Nordstrand's production of the Dingwall FD3 pickup design for use in conventional bass guitars. The Nordwall 4 is intended for 4-string parallel-fret basses and uses an offset split-coil construction with neodymium magnets.

Are these pickups hum-cancelling?

The Nordwall uses an offset split-coil design, which provides hum-cancelling operation. It is not a conventional single-coil soapbar pickup.

What's the difference between EMG® 40 and Bartolini® BC?

The primary difference in this listing is the physical housing shape. The EMG® 40 housing has a different footprint from the Bartolini® BC housing. Check both dimensions diagrams before ordering, as these sizes are not interchangeable.

Why does Nordstrand list EMG® 35 for the Nordwall 4?

Nordstrand's published standard 4-string configuration lists an EMG® 35 housing. Fat Bass Tone also offers the EMG® 40 housing configuration shown in this listing. Refer to the supplied EMG® 40 dimensions diagram to verify the version you are purchasing.

Will these fit my Dingwall bass?

The Nordwall line is intended primarily to bring the Dingwall FD3 design to conventional parallel-fret basses. Do not assume direct compatibility with a specific Dingwall model or multiscale instrument without verifying its pickup requirements and dimensions.

What bridge string spacing are these designed for?

Nordstrand specifies 18mm to 19mm bridge spacing for the Nordwall 4. Verify your instrument's spacing and pickup alignment before ordering.

Are the pickups active or passive?

Before replacing an existing active pickup system, confirm the wiring and electronics requirements for your particular installation. The Nordwall's published specifications describe its offset split-coil construction and neodymium magnets, but compatibility with every active system should not be assumed.
