DESCRIPTION

The Seymour Duncan SMB-5A and SMB-5D are 5-string Music Man® StingRay® replacement pickups designed to give you a choice between two distinct eras of the classic Music Man sound. Choose the SMB-5A for Duncan's warmer, vintage-inspired 70s Alnico 5 voice, or the SMB-5D for the tighter, punchier and more aggressive response associated with 90s-era Music Man basses.

SMB-5A 70's Alnico 5 (11402-32): The vintage-voiced option uses oversized Alnico 5 rod magnets together with Seymour Duncan's unique coil windings to deliver an extended response at both the treble and bass ends of the frequency spectrum. Compared with the ceramic version, Seymour Duncan describes the SMB-5A as warmer on the bottom and more detailed on top, with the organic response and feel associated with the original 70s StingRay basses.

SMB-5D 90's Ceramic (11402-30): The ceramic option uses two large ceramic bar magnets and a custom coil wind for a tight, articulate response with solid low end, immediate attack, clarity and power. It is designed to maintain low-end clarity and definition on the low B string and is an excellent choice for players looking for the punchier, more aggressive character associated with 90s Music Man basses.

Both versions are passive, hum-cancelling pickups with shielded 4-conductor lead wire. Both are hand built in Santa Barbara, California using Forbon flatwork and are vacuum wax potted for squeal-free operation.

These pickups are drop-in replacements for 5-string Music Man® StingRay® basses. They may fit into OLP instruments as well, but check the dimensions of the pickup against the size of your OLP pickup slot to be sure.

NOTE: These pickups are not for use with Music Man® basses that have a 3-way blade switch.

Choosing Between the Two

Choose the SMB-5A Alnico 5 if you want the warmer, more organic vintage character of Duncan's 70s-inspired Music Man pickup, with a warm bottom end and detailed highs. Choose the SMB-5D Ceramic if you want a tighter and more aggressive response with immediate attack, strong articulation and the punch associated with 90s Music Man basses.
