DESCRIPTION

The Trickfish Split Coil bass pickup was built to answer the question that’s always followed split coil designs: does it actually sound like a single coil? The honest answer is that a split coil will always be slightly fuller and a touch thicker through the mids than a true single coil — that’s physics, not a flaw. What we’ve done is make that difference as small as possible while delivering something the single coil never could: complete silence when you need it.

What you keep is the openness, the articulation, the dynamic response to your touch. Dig in and there’s real punch and presence. Play lightly and it softens with you. The snap on a slap is there. The warmth when you roll back to the neck is there. The growl that lives in the midrange of a great single coil Jazz Bass pickup — that’s there too.

What’s gone is the 60-cycle hum. Gone in solo positions. Gone under stage lighting. Gone in the studio, through IEMs, at any volume. For players who need the full tonal palette of a single coil pickup available at all times without compromise, this is the pickup that delivers it.

Installed the new Trickfish 5-string Split Coil Jazz pickup set in my Sire V5, and the fit was perfect. I was a little concerned the split-coil design might lose some of the openness and top-end response of a traditional single coil, but the top end is still alive without sounding tinny.

The neck pickup especially sounds great and works really well with my passive Sire with a heavier cap value installed, getting just a tad bit closer to a P sound if I want. I also really appreciate the radiused design, build quality and materials. All are top-notch.

Big thanks to Fat Bass Tone for the order!

Trickfish split coil 5 string pickups sound very nice

No noise and closest in sound to a vintage single coil that I’ve tried. They feel nice and open. If you’re looking for the extra fatness and compression you usually get from a split coil, it may be upsetting how flat and open these sound. I’m digging them more and more. I think I’ve tried just about every 5 string split coil made and these are hitting the spot.

Trickfish pickups

These are great pickups! They replaced a set of Delanos which I really liked but I was looking for a bit more warmth and these deliver very well. The B-string is a little less pronounced than with the Delanos but that seems to be the only downside to the swap. The smooth and radiused covers are very comfortable and look great.
